With Saving Salvador - A Tribute to Dali, Enrique Gasa Valga continues his artistic exploration of extraordinary personalities of the 19th and 20th centuries. After successful plays such as ROMY, Der Fall Wagner and Viva la Vida, he is now devoting himself to one of the most dazzling, polarizing and fascinating artists of surrealism: Salvador Dalí.
The play does not approach the life and work of the Spanish painter through mere biography, but tells his story from an unusually personal perspective - that of Gasa Valga's mother, Gracia Valga Marcé, who worked alongside Dalí as a nurse in her younger years. Her experiences with the eccentric artist form the emotional thread of this production and lend it an intimate depth that goes far beyond the portrait of a public figure.
"Salvador Dalí and his painting have been with me since I was a child. My mother often told me anecdotes about the artist. The precision and technique of his painting is juxtaposed with the facets of the world of the unconscious. He managed to turn the dream into reality through his paintings," says Enrique Gasa Valga about his personal connection to the subject.
In a field of tension between reality and dream, between technical brilliance and surreal fantasy, the new dance piece moves through the various creative phases of Dalí - from his early works to his often controversially discussed late work. Gasa Valga leaves room for ambivalence and contradiction: Dalí's eccentricity, his provocations and his public appearances remain as much a theme as the emotional depth and symbolism of his visual language.
For the dance piece Saving Salvador, none other than Alberto Talarico and Valeria Angesi are jointly responsible for the stage design. With great creative precision and a keen sense of space, symbolism and atmosphere, the Italian artist duo create a visual world that encounters Dalí's surrealist imagery in powerful scenes and suggestive spaces.
Talarico and Angesi work internationally on stage sets for opera, theater and dance. Their designs are characterized by poetic clarity, dramaturgical sensitivity and an aesthetic that not only shapes the space, but also understands it as a living component of the production. Together they develop images that have a long-lasting effect - sensual, well thought-out and full of artistic depth.
What also makes this piece so special is the impressive musical accompaniment: two exceptional singers - including the celebrated Greta Marcolongo - and four virtuoso musicians from Italy lend the performance its sonic depth with their live performance. The music was written by Roberto Tubaro, who will create a new composition especially for this world premiere.
A tribute to Salvador Dalí is not a classic artist biography, but a kaleidoscope of dance: a homage to a life between genius and madness. In this world premiere, Dalí's work comes to life through expressive choreography, sensual images and surreal theatricality - carried by a personal narrative style that allows the audience not only to see, but to feel what moves Dalí's art at its core.
